The purpose of the Foster Grandparent Program is to provide opportunities for senior service to meet unmet needs, to empower people 55 years and older to contribute to their communities through service, enhancing the lives of those who serve and those whom they serve, and provide communities with valuable services. The program provides an opportunity for older volunteers to have a positive impact on the lives of children in need.
The Foster Grandparent Program is authorized to serve children "…having special or exceptional needs or with conditions or circumstances identified as limiting their academic, social, or economic development.”
Foster Grandparent volunteers serve from 15 to 40 hours per week, while earning a small tax-free hourly stipend. Benefits to the volunteer include pre-orientation, monthly in-service training, physical once a year, paid holiday, vacation and sick leave, transportation to and from the site, meal while at the site, and insurance while volunteering.
The volunteers must be at least 55, live within the county where they want to volunteer, and meet income guidelines.
